WHO WE ARE ?
We are a group of concerned parents (and friends) of children receiving special education services in the district. We are united in our goal of making the district a better place for our kids.
WHO CAN BE AN ADVOCATE?
Any parent or community member committed to improving education in the district are welcome to join us. You can submit your request via e-mail : klsdspecialedadvocacy@gmail.com or via facebook page: KLSD Special Education Advocacy. All you need to do is introduce yourself, answer a question why you would like to join this group and please commit with respecting the rules.
Here is how the dictionary defines the term “advocate“: ad-vo-cate – Verb, transitive. To speak, plead or argue in favor of. Synonym is support. One that argues for a cause; a supporter or defender; an advocate of civil rights. One that pleads in another’s behalf; an intercessor; advocates for abused children and spouses. A lawyer. (The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Third Edition) An advocate performs several functions: Supports, helps, assists, and aids; Speaks and pleads on behalf of others; Defends and argues for people or cause.
WHAT WE DO ?
Actively advocate for students receiving Special Education Services at KLSD School District.
Actively Participating at BOE meetings
Document and communicate facts
Promote a network of parents and create a forum to share information
Promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusion within the community
Lobby local politicians
Ally with similar advocacy groups
Protect and promote the educational rights of students with disabilities
Support parents as they fight for a quality education for their children
WHAT ARE OUR GOALS ?
An end to restraints and seclusion in our schools
Cameras in self-contained classrooms where students are non/limited verbal
Autism-specific training for staff
Accountability and Transparency (including an immediate third party review of two recent events)
Disability Representation at OSS level
